Modern vs Contemporary

Modern and Contemporary in interior design are not one in the same, as many people might think. Modern design refers to a period of time, it is a design style that was created in the 1920′s – 1950′s. It doesn’t change, it is a defined style, and will remain such forever. Contemporary design is ever changing. It is of the moment. Contemporary design is a living, breathing entity.

Modern in interior design really refers to “Mid Century Modern”. It is recognizable by its clean, unadorned interiors. Use of natural materials such as wood, leather, teak and linen are prominent. Moulded plywood and plastic is very popular in modern furniture, as well as polished metal. Furniture is very open and raised off the floor allowing for an airy feeling. Walls are often white adding to the expansive feeling. Modern interiors generally have bare floors and if area rugs are used, they are typically wool, and neutral in colour. Hints of colour were used in moderation. We generally refer to modern interiors as retro these days.

Contemporary by definition means “existing, occurring, or living at the same time; belonging to the same time.” And that is exactly the same for the use of the term in interior design. Contemporary design refers to what is popular or used right now. Contemporary design can be very eclectic for that reason, because it is ever changing and borrows pieces and styles from all different eras. It doesn’t have to be something that is “designed” right now – for example; furniture and art from the modern era are often used in contemporary design, and tradition mouldings and millwork are incorporated in many cases.

A contemporary home might incorporate large windows, unique or odd shapes, open plan and harmony with the surrounding landscape. The finishes would use a lot of natural elements such as fir or cedar and stone. The finishing details and furniture are in-ornate and use clean lines. Comfort and sustainability are key values that are important in a contemporary home.

What our clients have said

Just wanted to thank you for all your assistance and patience throughout our project. We originally hired a contractor to renovate the whole downstairs including our open plan kitchen. Initially everything was going fine until the contractor started extending the deadline and the cost kept on rising, with new issues arising regularly. We had set aside the bulk of our budget on the kitchen but with the cost of the job rising, we were told to compromise on the quality and finish or have to pay more. After a long and tiring dispute we ended up having to settle with the contractor for a fee for the uncompleted work. We approached SquareMelon shortly after the dispute, our budget was severally depleted and we where initially reluctant to approach a kitchen showroom. We sat down with the head designer and went through our vision, we were given honest and practical advice and even though comprises had to made, we managed to design a beautiful contemporary kitchen within our new budget. The team had to work around the existing works but managed to complete the job promptly with minimal discomfort and nuisance. My husband was extremely pleased and a special thank you to Daniel who installed and oversaw the works.

Mr and Mrs Coleman - Marylebone, NW1

We are absolutely delighted with our fabulous new kitchen from Square Melon. Hussein was a pleasure to work with and was extremely professional, honest and meticulous throughout the process from design ideas and budgeting, through to completion.

We visited a huge range of kitchen companies and chose Square Melon due to their personal approach, care and advise on achieving a kitchen that fits with our family needs and lifestyle. You can’t get that level of service very easily! We would highly recommend Square Melon and thank them for all their hard work, passion and enthusiasm on our project.

Mr & Mrs Hyde-Smith Pinner, Middlesex, HA5

I worked with Mr Hussein from Square Melon Ltd for supplying and installing a new kitchen. Initially I was going to only ask him to install a kitchen supplied by another vendor but after seeing his kitchen samples and competitive quote for a turn-key supply, installation including all appliances I decided to give the complete job.

Mr Hussein started his work promptly as agreed and finished well in time. I am very pleased with the new kitchen and would not hesitate to recommend Square Melon wholeheartedly. Unlike other trade arrangement this is truly a turn-key job where you dont have to worry once you have placed the order. I would rate them highly on Quality, Value & Reliability.
